The England coach also added: “I think we’re looking at two strikers against France, whether or not you call Ashley Young a striker or a midfield player. When you have a player like Rooney, who is excellent in that position, and a player like Young who is showing signs of being very good in that position it would be seem a bit strange if you just went to one lone forward.” So, 4-4-2 it is.

I'm thinking it's going to be dull dull dull out there as far as watching it goes. I can't for the life of imagine why any fans at all are making the journey - good luck to 'em, I say.

I think it's looking like

Hart
Johnson Terry Cahill Cole
Milner Gerrard Parker Downing
Young
Carroll

Against France.

A) I can see the midfield four playing nice and deep 5 yards in front of a lovely tight back four with Milner and Downing coming beautifully narrow to help break down the play.

B) Then have Carroll 50 yards away upfield on his own making farting noises trying to distract the French defense, while Young runs around looking for an excuse to fall over.

The only problem will be getting the ball from A) to B).

We will have possession for approximately 39% of the game, which will be when the back four play it between themselves for a couple of minutes before either Gerrard tries a pinpoint 40 yard pass to Carroll, or Milner punts one upfield for Carroll to fight for.

Both will have the same result, IE the French will regain easy possession, so the midfield will have to set up nice and deep.....

I'm happy to set up defensively as long as there is some option for mobility and counter attack. But 4-4-2 with these players is going to be very one dimensional. Even if he sets up with the same players but in a 4 -2-3-1, then there is some option for movement and flexibility.

Bob Hope, then.... :(
'I ran home immediately to my wife in excitement and said, 'I've seen the nearest thing to a Brazilian footballer you'll ever see in our Academy…..and he's from Lewisham!'

David Dein on Rocky Rocastle.

I wonder what Gazidis would have said......

Don't know?

But they should have been in the squad in front of Hendo regardless, IMO.

As far as I'm aware you can't.

If I were any of them and did get the call, my words would be something along the lines of 'Go f**k yourself'. Then carry on enjoying my holiday I'd already be on.

He can't play CM at all mate (struggles to play winger as well if we want to be honest  ) and we've lost 2 now. Jagielka can play there but more known as a CB these days. Whoever got the call has to be able to play central.

Because any professional Footballer would turn down the chance, to represent their country...

Some might not and would love the chance. When it's players like Richards who gets over looked time and time again when most can't see a good enough reason, he must be thinking what's the point. I'd seriously retire from the international game if I were him. No point him going to friendlies to sit on the bench.

I think you've said a lot of good things and I pretty much agree with you point for point. Hodgson will be aware that England will have a major problem creating chances if Carroll is isolated and will tell Young or Rooney to latch onto knock-downs and such. But Rooney especially may end up dropping deep to help out with the midfield - leaving Carroll alone and ineffective.

To be honest, it's hard to see how this is going to be any different from England's performance in 2010. I think it's possible Hodgson will be using Chelsea's recent CL victory to rationalise his safety-first approach. Sadly, they had three things England lack: hard-working players; Drogba; and luck.

What with injuries and a few awful decisions this is a properly dreadful squad. The group is going to be a f***ing struggle no doubt about it
