Rooney hit with 3 game ban

Wayne Rooney is set to miss the group stage of Euro 2012 after the England striker was handed a three-match ban for his sending off against Montenegro.

The Manchester United forward was dismissed by referee Wolfgang Stark during last week's 2-2 draw in Podgorica after kicking out at Miodrag Dzudovic.

The Football Association had been hoping that Uefa would show leniency towards Rooney despite the regulations confirming a three-match suspension would be the appropriate punishment.

It's 4/11 that Fabio Capello doesn't include Wayne Rooney in his Euro 2012 finals squad and 2/1 he does. What do you think? Bet now

Uefa has now confirmed that Rooney will miss England's next three competitive fixtures, although there is the right to appeal.

A Uefa statement read: "The Uefa Control and Disciplinary Body has today handed down a three-match suspension to England forward Wayne Rooney following his dismissal during the Uefa Euro 2012 qualifier in Montenegro last Friday.

"Today's decision was taken in relation to the red card shown to Rooney for assault after 74 minutes of England's final Group G game, the 2-2 draw with Montenegro in Podgorica.

"The striker will now be suspended from playing in his country's next three Uefa national competition matches for which he would be eligible.

"An appeal may be lodged against the verdict of the Uefa Control and Disciplinary Body within three days of the dispatch of the reasoned decision."
Waiting

The FA released a statement in response to the suspension which read: "Further to Uefa's decision to impose a three-match suspension on Wayne Rooney following his sending off against Montenegro, the FA await the full reasons from the disciplinary committee, and will give full consideration to the decision internally, before deciding on any response to Uefa or making any further public comment."

England coach Fabio Capello admitted after the game that it was a 'silly mistake' by Rooney and that the player had apologised for his red card.

Prior to the announcement from Uefa that Rooney would be banned for three games, Capello confirmed he would be exploring other options in the build-up to next summer's European Championship.

Rooney is not expected to start any of England's upcoming friendlies, but Capello must now decide whether to gamble on taking the 25-year-old to Poland and the Ukraine.

If England lodge an unsuccessful appeal, Rooney's unavailability for the group phase would leave Capello with a major quandary regarding his squad selection for the tournament.

He's an idiot and deserves it

Maybe now he might learn a hard lesson that you can't just lash out on the pitch when things aren't going your way.

I agree he deserves it. It was a ridiculous thing to do regardless of anything else that was going on.

SSN showed the stats, we've won more games without him. Time for the others to step up though now.

Rooney has never shown up for England apart from Euro 2004, Owen was a much bigger striker for England than Rooney will ever be. I agree that he deserves this and that we can do fine without him.

I hope he doesn't get picked period, I remember Theo saying in an interview that Rooney is the most vocal, noticeable and loudest personality in the squad within the players and seeing how much of a prick he is I wonder how much it affects the squad, especially with the lesser profile players.

Really wont matter a difference to your mob because he's never really managed to show is Man Utd form when playing for England and im sure I saw somewhere that at the last World Cup, he was statistically the worst player there.

Pointless taking him. It only takes 6 games to win it so what's the point of him missing 3. If we get through the group stage, it's half the way to winning so the players who got us through should player in the quarters and so on if we make it that far.

So what? We rely on Crouchy? Defoe? Bent?

We need Rooney, however much of a n0b he might be, he's one of the best players in the world! Even if he only plays half a game he's worth taking.

People need to take the Arsenal (or City-Yorkie) tinted spectacles off and realise just how important Rooney is to England.

What are you on about?

I defend Rooney all the time and know how much we need him. Pointless taking him though if we could be out by the time he's available...

We shouldn't need him to get through the group stages anyway. He is our best player.

If Van Persie was suspended (or more likely injured) for the CL group stages you wouldn't suggest dropping him for the group stages! Why is this any different?

Why wouldn't you? You could just pick him after them like City have with Hargreaves as he wasn't fully fit. ;)
