Barnet Vs Arsenal | Pre Season Curtain Raiser

I thought he was good, you cannot judge him but his movement, positioning etc was all very good.

I thought he anchored the defence and kept it in check, and as someone who moaned no end about his height he can jump ridiculously high.

A few more games and we will see what he is really made of, but first impressions are :cloud9:

I was glowing with pride when he landed really awkwardly near the beginning of the match, then just got up and got on with it, not even a grimace!

Just got back a little while ago, decent match

Great to see Rosicky return and made Captain, along with Vermaelen, who was very good in defence and marshalling Silvestre who seemed to have lost his sense of positioning. Vermaelen is about the same height as Gallas, but he can jump very well, he also likes to go forward for corners, he covers well and he also made a couple of good clearances off the line to keep us in the game.

Wilshere had an amazing game, he did some great link up play with Arshavin and Rosicky.

Great movement and goal by Barazite, he and JET put in some good hard work, shame that JET missed his chance.

After the match, on my way home I turned a corner and walked into the team bus waiting for the players, I managed to get the signatures of Wenger, Rosicky, Vermaelen, Djourou, Almunia, Wilshere, Silvestre, JET and Eastmond on the back of my ticket.

http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archiv ... r-fitness-

'Today was just ideal to improve our fitness'

On his side's overall performance...
"Yes some good performances, we had 14 players at home but it was still a good game. Barnet gave us a good run out and for the first game it was quite good.

"We played basically with the Youth Cup-winning team in the second half and in the first half it was interesting because we were challenged physically. Barnet were well organized, committed and to improve our fitness it was just ideal."

On Thomas Vermaelen's debut...
"He had a good start and I think he had a good welcome to English football because he got some good challenges here. I think it was a good start for him overall. He is strong, solid, calm and when he became more confident in the second half you could see that he passes the ball well. He should be a good addition to the squad yes."

On Tomas Rosicky's long-awaited return to action...
"Tomas hasn’t played since January 2008 so that tells you a lot. We wanted him to be our captain today because he has been frustrated for 17-18 months of football. It’s fantastic to see him back with us."

On the prospect of further signings this summer...
"At the moment we are not very close to bringing anybody else – we are not on the verge of signing anyone."

On the next stage of pre-season in Austria...
"From Monday on everybody is in the same boat because the 14 players who weren’t here today will start to be competitive from Tuesday onwards."

I thought at times he got beaten in the air a bit too much at times, Though he showed some good leadership skills of thr back trying to organise at times and made some good tackles. He did at times get beaten with a bit of pace and trickery but this will be improved.

WHat dod you think of vermaelen.

I thought at times he looked solid at times, and at other times he looked good at times.
At times he made crucial last ditch clearances at times.
Bit too early to make any real judgement at times.

I found this post amusing

On Vermaelen, I was quite pleased with his efforts. He demonstrated the ability to lead and organise the defence, as well as a good level of determination and a great leap.

He did get beaten in the air a little bit though, but I'm sure he, like all players at this time of the year, was a bit rusty. In sum, it is too early to make such a claim, but I think he'll be a very good player for this club, particularly if he can unite the defensive unit, which looked very disjointed at times throughout last season.
