Arsenal 4-0 Fulham

Arsenal 4-0 Fulham

So, our disappointing 2009/10 campaign comes to a close in fine fashion. A win will secure the gunners yet another season finishing above the scum down the lane, and in the end we would have protected that statistic with a defeat, as Tottenham ended up losing 4-2 to Burnley  From the moment the teams were announced however, the only outcome was 3 points for Arsenal, as our opponents had rested their top stars ahead of their Europa League final clash against Athletico Madrid:

Arsenal: Fabianski, Sagna, Silvestre, Campbell, Clichy, Eboue, Diaby, Nasri, Walcott, Van Persie, Arshavin

Fulham: Schwarzer, Pantsil, Baird, Shorey, Smalling, Riise, Dempsey, Greening, Dikgacoi, Okaka Chuka, Nevland

Arsenal dominated from the start, and enforced this domination with a goal. Andrey Arshavin, on the back of a lengthy injury, took advantage of a rare Mark Schwarzer error leaving the Australian on his backside. With either a unmarked Robin Van Persie to pass to or a (nearly) empty goal to aim at, Andrey went for glory and almost selfishly powered home a finish to give Arsenal the lead.

Van Persie did get his goal though.

An accurate pass from Bacary Sagna put Theo Walcott clear of Fulham’s defence. He unselfishly cut it back for Robin Van Persie, whose initial shot was saved, but made no mistake with the second attempt to put Arsenal 2-0 up.

Theo was again the provider for Arsenal’s third. Walcott crossed the ball in looking for Eboue, but the Ivorian left the ball only for Fulham’s Chris Baird to slice the ball into his own net.

Arsenal had 3rd place in the bag, it’s always nice to kill the game off in the first half (for once).

In the second half, Johan Djourou made his first appearance of the season replacing the injured Mikeal Silvestre on the hour mark. Arsene then brought on two more substitutes in the 76th minute, bringing on Henri Landsbury and Carlos Vela for Theo Walcott and Andrey Arshavin.

Carlos Vela didn’t take long to make an impact, as a crisp ball from Samir Nasri put Vela one on one with Fulham’s keeper, with the Mexican coolly chipping Schwarzer to complete a superb performance by Arsenal (albeit against a second-string Fulham side)

That’s that then, no more Arsenal for 3 months. We can only hope Wenger makes the right signings resulting in a excellent 2010/11 Premier League season.

The only upside was that we won and Vela scored.
