External Hard drive

Postby GSK_AFC » Wed Jul 18, 2012 2:55 pm

I need an external hard drive so I can copy about 300 GB of media from one computer to another.
Anybody know anything about hard drives?
Recommendations please :Peace:

Just looking from Amazon I can see Toshiba and the prices of the less known brands are similar. Western Digital is more expensive and so is Seagate. Have you heard of Buffalo and WD My Passport Essential? because they are top sellers too.
Also, if you know do you know what FAT32 and NTFS is and which do I need?

You can format the drives to Fat32 or NTFS yourself so don't listen to the bumph on the website.

The best budget drives are Samsung and Hitachi.

FAT32 also works with Mac but can't copy files larger than 4gb(for instance, Blu-ray copies of movies)

You can't go wrong with either of the brands you listed, I'll probably go with WD or Toshiba if you're getting a good price on those.

Exactly.
By doing this you might lose about 3% of you total memory, but it's still worth it if you're looking to transfer large files at once.

About 2 years ago I bought a Samsung Story Station [1000 GB/1TB] for about £60. (which was extremely cheap for 1TB back then)

If you're only looking to store 300 GB and not planning to spend alot money, you might want to buy Western Digital WD5000 "My book Essential" [500 GB]. I bought this one myself about 4 or 5 years ago for about £70, so i'm sure you can buy it for less than £40 these days.

Ok, thank you, I will buy the more sturdier one of the two.

One more question

If I have a USB port on my TV, can I plug in the hard drive and watch my videos from my hardrive on my TV or plug it in my xbox and watch my videos like that? or does it depend on the file type of the video?

Thanks.

Firstly, depends on the TV. My TV has a USB Port but only allows music and pictures.
Yes, only certain files used on XBOX.
But, you can use Windows Media Center to play the videos(Plug hard drive into PC, and connect xbox to pc via LAN cable)

If you have photo's with a high sentimental value, make sure you back them up on at least 3 harddrives to make sure you won't ever lose them.

Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery should be a reliable program to do the job.
The software works with Windows 7.0, Vista, 2003, XP and 2000, and recovers complete data from FAT32, VFAT, NTFS and NTFS5 based partitions and volumes.

Anyone know what the lifespan of an external hard drive is? I'm looking at getting a Seagate Expansion Desktop 2TB... I don't have that much data now, but I'll easily end up accumulating that much over the next 5-10 years. Would it last that long, or would it be better to get a smaller one and update every few years?
