I'm a sucker for energy-saving devices and this is my current build:

  • AMD E350 1.6 GHz dual-core processor
  • MSI E350IA motherboard
  • ATi Radeon HD 6310 graphics (80 shaders, 500MHz core, 1066 MHz RAM, 256MB buffer)
  • 2x2 GB Kingston DDR3-1333 MHz RAM
  • 1 TB Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM HDD (5400 RPM would have been ideal, but I opted for this)
  • PicoPSU-90-XLP
  • A 24 inch Dell ST2410

This setup (without the monitor) currently consumes around 17W in idle mode in Arch Linux with Fglrx. During stress testing, the maximum I have seen it go is 30W.

I do have a Llano based laptop with discrete graphics for gaming purposes, although I hardly use it anymore. I plan on getting an energy-efficient/CULV Ivy-Bridge processor when it comes out this year.

I think Ivy Bridge chip will really be worth getting, but hasn't it been delayed slightly?

My bird would cut off her right arm to have one. Its taken all of my powers of logic and persuasion to convince her to not to want one (although she doesnt, shes got an Iphone 4 and a Macbook pro).

Been worth it though, saving that cash has allowed me to spunk my hard earned dough on this

Yes. CPU performance is better than the highest clocked Intel Atom processor and GPU performance is comparable to NVIDIA ION based solutions. I know it's a pittance, but all I use it for is 24x7 downloading and web browsing. The performance-per-watt, however is amazing. It easily plays slightly outdated games like BioShock 2, Portal 2, etc without hiccups.

Yes, the launch has been pushed backed to June, but it's worth the wait. It'll be interesting to see how much of an improvement the tri-gate transistors provide.

It looks way to good to be true

I mean £700 for that when the GTX590 is worth £500 on it's own

Ivy bridge is a great option if you have an older cpu but I don't think it is worth the upgrade from a Sandy Bridge unless you use on board graphics.

It's crazy, that computer should be at least £2000 by prebuilt standards. They have gone for a best of the best, elite build (I am surprised they didn't put in more than 4GB of RAM to be good and at least a named brand) but charged a mid range prebuilt price for it.

Note how they have spelt "bargains" in the menu and how the have spelt "clearance" in the model description, seriously suspect.

It kind of suggests that the battery isn't included too.

Usually if an offer on t'internet sounds too good to be true then it probably isn't true! I'm staying clear of the site.
