PC Problems

Postby Reverend Gooner » Fri Oct 22, 2010 6:34 pm

My PC has been working fine since I bought it in May 2009. Since June 2009 no components have been changed and the unit hasn't been opened or even moved. Everything from then until now has been fine.

Today though when I loaded up I get this error right after the Bios loads up.

DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

So I look for help on good old google and I do the recommended things like unplug/remove everything and put the hard disk as priority 1 in bios load but still it does the same thing.

So I find my Vista 32mb home premium disc and insert it like it starts to load but when it gets to the screen where it says Windows corporation and the disc starts to load with the green bar flashing across i freezes in the same place every time and eventually a blue screen comes up saying

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

I have read speculation about what that means including symantec and graphics card issues but it can't be as I don't have symantec and my graphics card is fine plus nothing has even loaded yet to use it. This second error means I cannot fix the first.

Does anyone know what I can do?

Two immediate things to do, run CWS shredder (if you've looked up naughty things, but do it anyway) and then download Malwarebytes Anti Malware programme. Both are free, but PM me if you can't find them, and I'll e-mail them over to you...

I suggest you may have a virus, but I'd guess that looking at the synopsis that you have malware.

Symentec is Norton AV

Lastly, if all else fails, do a system restore, and run the above.... And bin IE!

No porn has been viewed  I don't have norton and I cannot even get past bios to run any program, I can't even get to windows load up to go into safe mode.

Good idea for a sticky Trina, good luck with yours and post them up anyway.

Rev, is it a desktop?

If you are running two sticks of memory (RAM) remove one and test, if it doesn't work, try the other one.

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL is almost always two things, bad memory or the BIOS needs to be reflashed.

For the first problem, check the BIOS by hitting delete or F2 as soon as you turn on the machine (Keep pressing it) to see if the HDD is recognised.

Don't talk to me about f***ing PC problems. My internet keeps cutting out and my PC has just deleted NINE MONTHS worth of business e mails from Outlook Express!

I don't think my bios is detecting the hard drive. I am on the main tab and the only thing I can see recognised is the Opticart DVD RW A.

The thing is that I haven't touched the inside of my PC for months and months. I just checked and the hard drive is connected correctly. What should I do?

Gunngunn: It is a desktop and it has 2 sticks of 2gb ram, they have always been fine though. I will try that but could it be the bios reflash thing?

I managed to get into "Windows boot manager", I don't know how but it flashed up. I rans a "diagnostic memory test for 2 hours and the memory seems to be fine but when I restarted I still got the BSOD error.

I also still get the DISK ERROR despite all connections being fine

Update: The IRQL error I am getting when loading up the vista cd is an nvidia driver problem as it is a nvstor.sys error but I cannot load anything up to change the drivers as I need to load up the vista dvd first in order to try and get on my PC :dontknow: :dontknow:

I just removed some RAM like suggested and it didn't change the blue screen

I would be surprised if it did change the issue. The error you are getting is a classic disk error.
"DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" usually means the hard drive is dead or has totally lost the image. If you don't have backups of your important files, treat this as a lesson learned!

In the BIOS, does it recognise the drive at all? If it does not, then you have likely lost the drive. Two things here...

1. Power off the server and unplug and reconnect each connector - power and data - from the drive and the mother board. Sometimes the connectors can tarnish enough to give a bad connection and just reseating can solve the problem. (By no means always, but it is good to try the simpler and less dramatic things first in case that solves the issue without creating big hassles if you can avoid them). Then see if the BIOS can see the drive.

2. If you can get hold of another known working spare drive, plug that in and see if it is detected. If it is, then you have isolated the problem to the disk. If the BIOS cannot see your disk but can see others, then the disk has had it.

3. If you CAN see your disk then the OS may have a damaged or missing file. In that case, boot off the installation OS DVD and choose the repair option. If that also fails, then you will need to do a complete new install.
