Arsenal won't win title with me as centre forward

Arsenal won't win title with me as centre forward

I hope Wenger realises that!

Andrey Arshavin admits Arsenal don't have the class to match title rivals Manchester United and Chelsea.

The dimunutive Russia international says the Gunners will never be champions while they have to rely on him as a makeshift centre forward.

Arsenal briefly went top of the Barclays Premier League last month after beating Bolton, but have since fallen six points off the pace following a draw at Aston Villa and last Sunday's 3-1 humbling by Manchester United
'Third place is where we stand today, and that is already a great success for Arsenal when you take into account the class of our eleven players,' said Arshavin. 'Of course, we try to win every match, but class is class.'

The 28-year-old struggled to make an impact against United after starting as the spearhead at the Emirates. Arshavin's favoured role for Russia is as a second striker, though he has found success for Arsenal playing down the left wing.

'If Arsenal want to become champions, how can they select Arshavin as centre forward?' he said. 'I am 173cm (5ft 7in) and it suits me, but next to the big centre halves of United it is very difficult to fight for the ball, especially in the air.'

Asked if he was criticising Arsene Wenger's selection, he revealed his comments were instead prompted because the Arsenal boss had been unsuccessful in the transfer window.

'It's from frustration,' explained Arshavin of his makeshift role. 'Van Persie is injured and unlikely to play again this season. Eduardo is injured too, but he may be ready to face Chelsea. We are in a difficult situation when it comes to recruiting players.'

Arsenal face a tough task matching a Chelsea side who registered an impressive 3-0 win at the Emirates in November.

United's win last weekend was almost as impressive, with Arshavin surprised at how easily his team-mate Gael Clichy succumbed to the guile of winger Nani.

'In training it is very difficult for me to beat Clichy, but Nani made all the play through him.'

I don't think any other player would have the balls to say this. It is great to have a character like this in the squad though and I do share his concerns.

The midget says true.

I agree but I bet Wenger absolutely hates it. He's a control freak and wants every one of our players to worship him and owe him their careers..... AA's constant press talk makes me worry that Wenger will want to offload him.

Arshavin has a leaky mouth.Somethings should be discussed with the coach and not directly in the face of the press.I've reiterated here over and over again that Arshavin will not last long at the club as he can't keep his tongue within and will betray us for money pretty soon

funny how some of you react.

he's one of our players with cesc and rosicky who shot on goal and don't pass the ball all the time (I just say Hleb). I hate it when we play like we want to walk with the ball in goal. I love arshavin's style of play and I don't see why he should change it.

It is nice to have some honesty, so refreshing.
Shame it has to come from a player playing out of position.

We had a good opportunity this season. Until RVP was injured.
We seemed to be doing ok, until the ManU game.

I hope we give Chelski a good game today. 2-1.

Seriously doubt we have the attacking threat a top team should have.
Something that you need in the CL.
Another nearly, but still trophyless season.

He's definitely right but wrong in his approach of going to the press whenever he's got something negative to say

Today, you played as a CF, which is quite unusual in English football...

"Well, yes... If Arsenal is serious about winning the Premiership, how can Arshavin be playing a CF? My 1.73m height suits me well, as far as I'm concerned, but when facing Manure's 'bouncers' of CBs, it's hard to win the ball, especially in the air."

Was it some sort of a tactical surprise prepared by Wenger?

"Oh no, it's because we've got no choice. Van Persie is out injured and it's doubtful that he plays this season again. Eduardo is injured too although he might be back for the next game. We've got a difficult squad situation at the moment."

Before this game, the English press kept saying that in case of winning, you can challenge Chelsea in the race for the first spot.

"It's easy for the press to make things out. But the third spot we occupy today is already a big success if you look at the class of all the eleven players. Obviously, we'll do our best to win every single game, but class is class."

What about the relations among the players?

"You've seen yourself the atmosphere in the 'family room'. I'd say that our relations are very freindly and it helps on the pitch. Of course, I feel closer to technical players, like Fabregas or Nasri. By the way, I have a really hard time trying to beat Clichy in training but today, Nani did it all game."
