Linkin Park lead singer Chester Bennington has died aged 41, LA County Coroner says.

The coroner said Bennington apparently hanged himself. His body was found at a private home in the county at 09:00 local time (17:00 GMT) on Thursday.

Bennington was said to be close to Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell, who took his own life in May.

Formed in 1996, Linkin Park has sold more than 70 million albums worldwide and has two Grammy Awards.

The band had a string of hits including Faint, In The End and Crawling, and collaborated with the rapper Jay-Z.

Its album Meteora topped the Billboard 200 chart in 2003 and is regarded as one of the biggest indie rock records of all time.

Bennington leaves a wife, and six children from two marriages.

He is said to have struggled for years with alcohol and drug abuse, and has talked in the past about suicide as a result of being a victim of abuse as a child.

I'd lie if I'd say I was an avid LP fan, but the music industry loses another great way too soon. Even more a loss for his family and friends. Tragic news. R.I.P

6 kids. Dude was getting busy. Always makes you wonder how bad it has to get to hang yourself.

I used to listen to their music quite a bit during my teen angst years. I'm shocked. Rest in piece.

Agreed. Coward's way out. Not fair to his 6 kids. Depression is tough but this guy had the means to get help.

It's a touchy subject... It's never that simple, people who want to kill themselves don't really have rational thought, otherwise they wouldn't be killing themselves (duh)

Can't really blame someone who isn't thinking straight

Does Ramsey's goal take any credit for this.

Like I said on the General Chat thread, considering their song content, not really surprising that one of them did this, but sad nonetheless

They never are. But the pursuit remains because the world is more hyper-real than real today.

It's almost as if depression can be so debilitating and horrific that it convinces people that suicide is the only way out. It shuts down the rational part of people's brains and they do things that are massively out-of-character and unfathomable to those lucky enough not to suffer from it.

It's a disease and should be treated as such, and it's incredibly sad that this person found themselves in a headspace so awful that suicide seemed like an appropriate thing to do. It doesn't make them a selfish individual, and I find it distasteful to judge someone who made an incredibly tough and tragic decision when they were at their very worst.

RIP and thoughts to his friends and family.

EDIT: Also worth remembering that he was sexually abused between the ages of 7-13, which lead to years of drug abuse, which is always going to massively increase the likelihood of someone suffering from depressing and ultimately being in a place to take their own life.
