Can we have law ( earthlings on fire ) from the album earthling as today's track please
This should be another run for the hills song
Bowie gives An Alan partridge type vocal at the beginning
A distorted Bertrand Russell quote( I don't want knowledge- I want certainty
With a quote at the end supposedly Samuel beckett's fathers last words ( what a morning)
It sounds like some grand parody
In actual fact I quite like it
It's Bowie letting go and realising you can't fight every demon
It's catharsis after earlier songs like quicksand and the supermen.
It's the only song from earthling that he didn't perform live
I think the album is underrated
As much as I was denigrating his voyages into drum and bass yesterday
It was more about watching him dad dance to it where my objections are

I don't know what happened on Tuesday night?
I couldn't get on the site
And last night I was a bit sick
Can we have David Bowie impersonates as today's track please
At the end of the absolute beginners sessions when he had laid down his vocal
He decided to have a bit of a mess about
Imitating Springsteen, bolan, Tom waits Lou reed, Anthony Newley, iggy pop and Neil Young
Recorded at west side studios late June 85
It only surfaced a couple of weeks after he died
Good bit of fun

What did you think of those impressions?
Bolan sounded like Dylan aside from the warble
And the Neil Young was more like Tom petty
Can we have all the young dudes from the david live album as today's track
I like this reworking

I think he got the closest with the Lou Reed impression... the Iggy part cracked me up, great bit of burlesque and thought he nailed the 'murican accent. Also thought it was interesting how the Absolute Beginners instrumental appears to work as an effective universal template for various types of vocals.

A very fine soul version it is indeed. Bowie at his eboniest.

Can we have life on Mars/ ashes to ashes as today's track please
Another nacho remaster from his 1980 tonight show appearance with Johnny Carson
Recorded 3rd broadcast 5th sept
While he was on a 3 week break from performing in the elephant man
It was his only live performance in 1980
And as nacho says that was probably the reason why lodger and scary monsters never got toured
Just too busy to rehearse it
The band that he used was said to have been the one planned for the tour
It featured members of hall and Oates and graham parkers backing band
They also featured on other things like the video for fashion and christiana f
Another bit of gold dust from USA tv
In England we had 20 year old tony Curtis film being shown
Just had a look at some old programmes and I was off to Man city the following day
It was 8 pound on the train with the travel club and a seat was 2 pound 30 pence
All I remember of the game was willie young putting us in front( great because he was getting stick all round the country for bringing down paul Allen in the cup final)
Dennis tueart equalised from the spot
It was a bit naughty getting back to Manchester Piccadilly as well
Hooliganism was on the rise
You didn't really wear your colours in them days

Couldn't find any footage of the Man City game, but did stumble upon a highlight video of our 2-0 victory over Spurs from a couple of days prior.

Two very fine passes by Graham Rix for both goals... :hail:

I was in the clockend for that one as well
There should be footage of that city game to come out one day? It was shown on the itv big match programme
They used to show extended highlights of a game in london ( it was Spurs 0 man utd0 that week & 2 other regional games but short clips
Not sure if it was shown in London but it was the feature match in the manchester( Granada area)
Anyway let's not stray off topic
It discombobulates some tee hee
What did you think of Bowie on the Carson show?
Think he may have seen elvis?
The Richard that he calls out to at the end of life on Mars
Was a fellow guest on the show Richard pryor
3 months before while making stir crazy he poured rum over himself and set himself alight
He said it was a suicide attempt
He was not in a good place

Can we have the drowned girl as today's track please
From the Baal ep for the play he made for BBC TV in 1982
Taken from a berthold Brecht song that in German was known as( oh bollocks I'm too tired)
Let's call it the balled of the drowning girl
Lotte leyna( rosa Kleb of the knife in the shoes from Russia with love) recorded it 1st
But for me it's another stonking Bowie vocal
Rca requested a video
Shot in Berlin during the video for wild is the wind
It features ringers tony Visconti on guitar
Mel gayner from simple minds on drums
And a miming coco schwab among the wind section

@Carson peformance he looks in much better shape than he did in the late and this particular performance is a testament to that... I believe he had kicked his cocaine habit around this time as well? Demonstrates a fantastic vocal range on both songs, especially during the last chorus of Life On Mars. With Ashes To Ashes he really does leave you wondering whether he has three lungs.

Yes I believe he was clean by 1980 after his Berlin period with iggy pop
But I have read that he later would attend aa meetings as he had a problem with beer
That's a strange one to me
Doesn't seem to fit the stereotype of a drinker to have a beer addiction
It's the 1st I have heard of it but maybe it comes from my ignorance?
I know when I drink beer I swell like f**k
He never seemed to have that problem.
Can we have time as today's track please
Mister Sussex has remastered from the 1980 floor show taken from the 1973 marquee show filmed for us tv.
It's camp frippery of the highest order
I love it

Apparently he admitted to being a sober alcoholic in an interview with Jeremy Paxman back in 1999.

Anyway, on to this fine version of "Time";

Good that he knew where the booby traps lay hence his giving up on the booze and gear
From the same year 99 as that paxman interview can we have his performance of I can't help thinking about me from the storytellers vh1 special as today's track
It's a rousing version of the 1st solo song he ever wrote and he tells a funny story about Stevie Marriott at the beginning.
Worth listening after as well for a very funny anecdote
I will just say
