Talk to your wife. Based on what you've shared here, she seems to be the problem - not your papa in law. Your father in law's behaviour just seems like a symptom.

Eh? Spousal abuse won't solve anything and cannot be justified unless she is trying to attack you. If you need to get physical as a last resort, then take it out on him not your wife. A quick grab by the lapels and force up against the wall with strong words might be better to show you're serious without leaving any physical marks. Not that I would condone that.

I still think that next time he goes into that study at night, switch off the electricity (or unscrew the lightbulb) or just stick a cctv camera in there.

Yeah but if he starts on the dad his wife will give him sh*t so may as well go to the source.

Also the father will be horrified to know he's the cause of Chris's male fury which is being taken out on his daughter.
I also think Chris should walk around the house in the evening in a Gimp suit and drag his Mrs out of the lounge and into the bedroom in front of the Father ........... think that idea is actually better than the beating tbh because he can't even object, just has to sit there and take it. lol
