The United States has confirmed the first case of the new coronavirus on its territory.
The Centers for Disease Control said the virus, which originated in China, had been diagnosed in a traveller who arrived in Seattle from China.

Great time for a deadly disease to break out in China... when the biggest global annual human migration is happening... Chinese New Year.

Sick of these idiots, just shoot them down on sight.

Random nutters running around in public stabbing people .............. handle them definitively.

There are women and children out on the streets we can't be having it, always in bloody London as well.

Manchester Arena and Glasgow airport are the only ones of note outside of London.

Looks like this prick had been released after being convicted of previous terror offences.

Shame Boris' change in the law was too late to stop this happening

They're considered to be such a danger to the public that they have armed anti-terrorist officers tailing them 24/7.

Just f***ing shoot them and chuck them in a bin lorry.

From the Live feed on The Guardian.

Whitehall sources said the suspect had been very recently released from prison where he had been serving a sentence for the possession and distribution of extremist material.

It is understood that he left prison just a matter of days ago after serving half of his more-than-three-year sentence.

A Whitehall source said: “He was under surveillance, that is what allowed police to do their job so quickly. It could have been much worse than it was.

“There had been concerns when he was in prison but there were no powers for any authority to keep him behind bars.

“There was nothing that could be done to keep him behind bars under existing laws, hence why he was under surveillance and strict licencing conditions.

“He had served half of his sentence, which was more than three years, so had to be released despite concerns over his conduct.

“The public will look at this case and say why was this individual not kept behind bars and the Prime Minister shares that view.

“This shines a light on something that clearly needs addressing.”

The PM’s plans to crack down on early release would not have applied to this individual because the current plans only apply to more violent offences.

The Prime Minister is expected tomorrow to come forward with new plans to deal further with terrorist offenders.

The concerns about the man’s behaviour behind bars included ‘language that suggested he continued to hold extremist views’.

A Whitehall source said that the ‘very stringent’ licensing conditions included a curfew.

Looks like Boris’s law change will only affect the more violent cases and this wasn’t one of them. Until today.

You need the cooperation of families, of imams, and of teachers etc

If you lock people up and throw away the key, you are much less likely to get that. A mother, sister, imam etc is going to be less likely to pass information to the police about a young man who is showing cause for concern, if that person is then likely to be put away for 20 years

Thats just reality.

The police are struggling to ballance public safety with even handed justice. The answer is not to just bang people up for longer. Sadly, its more complicated than that.

But if there is a refusal to cooperate then those who knew something should also be punished, no?
If they knew someone who was going to go and commit murder and said nothing, what does that make them?
More importantly, more in depth investigations are required into who is radicalising these people.

You need good will from innocent Muslims who are not nutters, which is of course the vast majority of them. You cant just criminalise everyone.

Youre saying you want the whole family to get into trouble for not reporting their teenage son, who lets say has just gone on a rampage

I'm saying I want them to have confidence to come forward and speak to the police long before that happens, when maybe mum has overheard some worrying conversations, safe in the knowledge that her family will be treated fairly and reasonably.

Mums etc are not going to ask the police for help if they are scared of the police and they think their son’s going to get banged up for years and years
