It's like the photo ID situation in the US. At the moment it's a divisive issue because introducing compulsory photo id's can be seen as discriminatory etc. but at the end of the day most civilised countries use compulsory photo id's because they're bloody useful. So it's claimed that Republicans only want it as a form of suppression but that doesn't change the fact that it makes sense for all Americans to have a photo ID.

Discrimination is not the only way that ID cards can be used to suppress people
