“For the first 20 minutes of the flight, the pilots spoke in a normal way, you could say cheerful and courteous,” Robin said. “We heard the flight commander prepare the briefing for landing at Düsseldorf and the response of the co-pilot seemed laconic. Then we heard the commander ask the co-pilot to take the controls.

“We heard at the same time the sound of a seat being pushed back and the sound of a door closing.”

Robin said it was assumed that the flight commander needed to go to “satisfy natural needs” – in other words, use the toilet.

From Guardian Live feed,

It's also said that screams along with very loud banging can be heard in the last 10 seconds and that the co-pilot can be heard breathing but not saying a word. For the series of events that happened to unfold, someone had to have been conscious in the cock-pit.

Co-Pilot was a 28 year old male from Germany with 630 hours and was with the airline from September 2013.

Are they allowed in there? I've really no idea. You know what it's like after a few coffees though. Can be pissing all morning!

I have to say though. Should have a toilet in there and have no entrance from public areas.

I think they already do that on the Israeli airlines.

With the huge sums spent on aircraft, I don't see why new ones are still being built without a toilet in the cockpit. I expect its because of the cockpit would have to be bigger, so less passenger seats and less profit for the airline.

If you are referring to stewards then yes they are allowed in, it is usually procedure to take the pilots/co-pilots place but it depends on the Airline that two people have to be in the cock pit at all times and the cabin lead would take the place of the pilot or co-pilot if they have to leave.

Procedure in America, not in Europe, which will probably change now.

This news is shocking. What an unbelievably selfish act. There was a theory on the bbc website that the plane that went missing over the sea (malaysian?) could be a suicide too. Nightmare scenario! This is why I tend to drink alot during flights.

I do the same when traveling with the car.

You do realise that most people just don't stop breathing when they pass out.

I know. That's why I said normally.

He'd do well to pass out and not fall off his chair or anything.

He didn't pass out.

The pilot who was locked out was entering a code into the cock pit door trying to get in and the co-pilot inside was denying him access by holding down the lever.

The cock pit doors have a code that can be entered which grants access after 30 seconds, in those 30 seconds the pilots inside can do nothing which means the door will open after the 30 seconds or they can pull a lever which keeps the door shut. The co-pilot kept his hand on the lever during the eight minutes.

Not to mention the fact he initiated the plane's descent.

Obviously but I'm sure there's a way of telling if someone is conscious or not by their breathing. Either way, the French investigator felt there was enough evidence to come out and say he downed the plane on purpose and was awake when it crashed.

Also I think that the other pilot would have been able to get back into the cockpit had Lubitz not locked the door manually from the inside. If he was unconscious and this was all a tragic accident there's no reason why he'd have locked the other pilot out.

Heartless visitors mug for selfies at East Village blast site

Self-absorbed jerks are treating the East Village gas-explosion site like a tourist attraction, shooting grinning selfies of themselves even as rescuers search for life in the ruins where two bodies might still be buried.

Amid the backdrop of the devastation wrought by the explosion, fire and collapse of three buildings that injured 25 people, seven smiling women used a selfie stick late Friday to snap a cheery photo of themselves.

“Disgusting beyond words,” wrote a commenter on the local-news blog EV Grieve, which reposted the snap.

“Take a look at these people. Remember their faces,” wrote Diane DiDonato, of Brooklyn, on Facebook. “They don’t deserve those smiles. People are dying behind them.”

Others called it “disaster porn.”

“It’s heartless,”said Maurice Herz, 83, of the East Village.

“THIS IS A TRAGEDY NOT A TOURIST ATTRACTION,” one frustrated neighbor wrote in a sign taped to a front door on nearby 7th Street. “SHOW SOME RESPECT,” the sign demanded.

Other selfie-snappers included Christina Freundlich, whose LinkedIn profile lists her as a communications director for the Iowa Democratic Party. She posted a grinning photo of herself at the scene giving the peace sign.

“Too soon,” one follower chided.

Residents near the blast site posted messages to the selfie-snappers.Photo: Demetrius E. Loadholt

Freundlich couldn’t be reached for comment Saturday.

East Villager Pablo Fernandez wore a green “Elf” shirt and red and white leggings as he posed for photos near a barricade before his bachelor party.

“I’m totally ridiculous, but I’m not normally like this,” Fernandez said.

His pals shot a video of him dancing near the site.

“This is so we could send the pictures to our friends in Spain and say, ‘Look what we did,’ ” said a chum who declined to give his name.

Jeanie Slade’s disaster-site selfie showed her and a pal flashing open-mouthed grins and the hashtags “#beingtourists and “#weresocreepy.”

Asked about the selfie by The Post, Jeanie called it “satire.”

“My heart goes out to the people of New York, and this satire post was in poor taste,” she insisted. “My intention was to point out how many people post selfies in inappropriate times and it backfired.”
