PC Help

Postby Trina » Wed Nov 07, 2007 10:33 am

Before I throw this pile of junk out of the bloody window!!

My pc keeps freezing and I have no option but to unplug it, then plug it back in.

When it freezes nothing works including ctrl, alt and delete.

I've ran a virus scan with AVG but nothing comes up.

Anyone any ideas? :(

Desktop or laptop?

Trina try checking your task manager when this is occuring, to see what the puter is running, and if there is any sudden increase or decrease from the CPU.
Check to see if it is happening when you are also running different programmes, sometimes they can clash especailly if its a torrent site or the like.

OR maybe....?

It could just be that the drivers need updating?

(just thinking of what ive picked up on off the puter whizz that i live with!!!)

open the task manager & check when you have had to reboot, (before it crashes again) you'll still see the processes if you make your open windows smaller ;)

How old is the PC? what CPU have you got? Has it ever been upgraded?

(this sounds very similar to a prob we had, with us our CPU was on its way out, which im hoping is not the case with you, cos often when that goes it can wipe out the motherboard with it) :S

If it is the CPU, take the side panel off the tower unit so it circulates more air.

I had this problem with my laptop when I first got it. It ended up being a virus that a normal virus scan couldn't detect. It had a way of hiding itself so that it couldn't be detected. May not be the case with you, but it sounds similiar. We ended up having to go thru the computer support people over the phone, and they walked us thru some steps to get it back running again (don't remember what they were, the wife did it), but we also had to buy a new updated security package to protect from it again. Theres always new virus that are created every week that find a way around virus scans, so you have to always get the new updated version to be safe.

All Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> Disk clean up

Good start there.

I'd recommend downloading an anti-Spyware program. I myself use Spyware Doctor and although it costs it's very good at dealing with both spyware and malware. I think it picks up on viruses these days too...it's pretty decent.

Trying out all your suggestions now, thanks ;)

The main time it seems to freeze is when I don't touch my mouse for a while and mainly on a morning :?
