Computers freeze when the memory is overloaded, mostly.

Firstly you need to reduce the amount of running processes which eat at your RAM. Also, on start-up, there are a zillion programmes all trying to start, most of which don't need to go with start up, such as MSN, telephony, fax, and countless others. When you want them, open them, don't just let start-up do it all, it clogs the system up!

An extra RAM stick is fairly cheap, and you literally just plug them in, so that could be a suggestion.

Also, AVG is a freebie, and as such acts like one. You get what you pay for in terms of computers, although AVG is probably one of the better freebies.

Try downloading and running "Spybot search and destroy" and "Adaware" which will remove all the extras slowing your system down, then run a full anti virus check.

After which, go to Start >> Run >> MSConfig >> Start Up. Copy and paste all the lines and send them via PM to me, and I'll weed out the ones you don't need.

But it would help to know what system you are running also, which can be found in: Start >> My Computer >> View System Information (which is on the left menu on XP) Whatever you do, don't put that on public display though!! Just the bottom couple of lines will help, as it gives the RAM and CPU info.

Finally, for now, empty your recycle bin, there is always loads of stuff in there clogging up HDD, and also bin any stuff stored in "My Documents" which you really don't need.

After that, it'll be time to defrag, but that takes a while longer to do...

I thought when the memory was overloaded it generally just slowed a pc down?
Although i know ur meant to keep 10% free.
Ive never known it to make a pc freeze. :?

Depends really. If there is far too much going through, it just won't have it, so freezes, but in time (which could be a minute or 24 hours) it will eventually run through.

On ME, the system will freeze until the plug is pulled out, because it's not a very stable version of Windows, in fact 98 was probably better! On XP, you would be best with at least 512mb RAM, preferably 1024mb. Anything up of that, there really should be no problems, but even at 1gb (1024mb) there really shouldn't be anything other than something sinister slowing the system enough to freeze.

I thought when you meant PC i thought you were about to talk on how words like Half Caste is not allowed to be used
Ah screw it i'll get on with it, this is my fav poem which is what i had to learn & write & so on about last year in enlgish GCSE

Halfe–Caste by John Agard

Excuse me
standing on one leg
I'm half-caste

Explain yuself
wha yu mean
when yu say half-caste
yu mean when picasso
mix red an green
is a half-caste canvas/
explain yuself
wha u mean
when yu say half-caste
yu mean when light an shadow
mix in de sky
is a half-caste weather/
well in dat case
england weather
nearly always half-caste
in fact some o dem cloud
half-caste till dem overcast
so spiteful dem dont want de sun pass
ah rass/
explain yuself
wha yu mean
when yu say half-caste
yu mean tchaikovsky
sit down at dah piano
an mix a black key
wid a white key
is a half-caste symphony/

Explain yuself
wha yu mean
Ah listening to yu wid de keen
half of mih ear
Ah looking at u wid de keen
half of mih eye
and when I'm introduced to yu
I'm sure you'll understand
why I offer yu half-a-hand
an when I sleep at night
I close half-a-eye
consequently when I dream
I dream half-a-dream
an when moon begin to glow
I half-caste human being
cast half-a-shadow
but yu come back tomorrow
wid de whole of yu eye
an de whole of yu ear
and de whole of yu mind

an I will tell yu
de other half
of my story

John Agard

Hope you liked it

There's nothing wrong with memory. I've done the spybot and AVG earlier as I have used them for a while and not much came up. I've been through the startup aswell and not much is on it.

So the only option as it just froze again was to turn it off and for Fordy to hit it  Let's see if that works :P
