Fabianski - I won’t make it easy for Wojciech

Lukasz Fabianski is fit, fresh and ready to battle Wojciech Szczesny for Arsenal’s No1 shirt.

The Poland international struggled for first-team opportunities thanks to his young compatriot’s consistency between the posts, making six appearances in all competitions last season.

But the 27-year-old knows better than anybody how quickly times change after losing his place to Szczesny through injury in January 2011 - and is determined to make up for lost time.

“It can change very quickly,” Fabianski told Arsenal Player. “From my own experiences I know that, so I am ready to step up. I feel confident that I am able to be No 1.

“I am very happy, I must say. I had a little problem with my shoulder but so far everything has been going really well for me. I am happy with my fitness levels and the way I feel on the pitch.

“Pre-season is always a fresh start, and it is hard work for us. We have to do all of the running and gym work too, it's not like we just have to do just goalkeeping! It has been good work over the past few weeks.”

Fabianski says the team’s training methods have been heavily weighted towards positioning, not least the goalkeepers themselves.

“At the moment I would say we are especially focusing - particularly us goalkeepers - on positioning ourselves in certain situations,” said the Pole. “We are doing a lot of work with the 'vipers' that let us build up power in our legs, so everything that can help us improve.

“I didn't have too many opportunities to play last season but I am always focused and looking to improve, especially dealing with crosses because I think that is really important for a goalkeeper.”

No takers then? Familiar story.

Still, if he can finally grow a pair and perform when needed, then he could provide good competition. Providing he repeats the form he showed in, what? Five or six games?

One week he makes impeccable saves, the other week he ruins the entire game with one of his howlers.
He's just the kind of goalkeeper from which you don't know what to expect.
