Will we see an improvement for 2010/11?

When Flamini replaced Gilberto he was an instant success, but if you remember correctly Denilson was preferred in that role once Flamini left... and we looked anything but solid, I don't think he has a future in that role. It was only when he was replaced with Song mid way through that season that we started to look more solid.

I've said it before but I don't see Denilson as an out-and-out anything, he's more of an all-rounder. He could be a deep lying playmaker, and play next to Song, or he could replace Diaby and link up between Cesc and Song, but I don't think he'll ever be an out-and-out playmaker or holding mid.

^

Because he isn't one...

He is a CM, not a playmaker, attacking mid or a defensive mid, just a CM...

Good in attack, good passing, great at intercepting and can get stuck in, but by no means a cover for the defence.

I hate players being played out of position, gets right on my tits, because if they mess it up they get blasted by the fans...

I wouldn't expect Almunia to be good in midfield, just like i wouldn't expect Bendtner to be good in defence, so why play a player who is clearly NOT a DM, at DM?

Defensive midfielders are basically a 5th defender in the middle of the park for gods sake...

Over the last few years we've seen a reliance on holding midfielders, and I was against it for a long time. I prefered box-to-box men, preferably two, rotating between attack and defense.

But it's different today, there are specialists in every area, it's almost like the midfield has been broken up into sub catagories. It took me a while to get to know and love the holding players (because I thought it was a waste of a player), but looking at what their inclusion can bring to a team (freedom for creative geniuses like Cesc and Iniesta... soon Wilshere) they've become essential.

I'm just not sure if these Jack of all trade midfielders, who are good at everything but great at nothing, have a place in todays midfields.

He isn't a jack of all trades midfielder, he is a Central Midfielder, his attributes are very specialised to what he does rather than bringing through players who are brilliant at one thing and completely useless at another which relates to their job.

He excels at keeping the ball, passing, long shots and intercepting the ball, everything a Central Midfielder needs in his Arsenal, no pun intended.

He is extremely proficient in all of these things, so i don't see how he can really be called a jack of all trades master of....

Midfielders are getting more specialised but IMO thats a bad thing...

Why incorperate several players in midfield nowadays when 10 years ago one player would have done all of them?

Its about time we started bringing back midfielders who have key attributes but are adept at most things.

Funnily enough if anyone heard Talkshite yesterday Adrian Durham seems to be on a one man mission to get Wilshere into the England starting eleven.
He's so in love with him, he even called him the English Iniesta!

^^^ Well he's the closest thing we've had since... erm... yea.

I think today's "players of the era", are the creative geniuses, the tip of the diamond, edge of the box pass-masters. Every top youth academy across the continent is churning out these little maestros, and the game is changing to revolve around them.

It seems there's no more talk of "the next Vieira", but instead it's Cesc, Iniesta and Snejider rulling todays game, Nasri Gourcruff and Hazard (all compared to Zidane), Affelay, the younger Dos Santos, Gai Assassin, Ozil, Erikkson etc etc.

Like I said, I prefered the mids who could do the whole job, but these little technical wizzards are great to watch, they have superior intelligence and the game - at the highest level - revolves around them. I've been fully converted. I say stick 7 f**king defenders behind 2 creative geniuses and let them mesmorise and create 50 chances per game for whichever lucky bastard's playing upfront.

Looked strong last night. But then again he was up against Sandro (debut), Palacios and some unknown from their ressies.
But it was good to see him imposing himself none-the-less.

Long may that continue.
