Could he?

Could he?

Postby GunnGunn » Fri Apr 13, 2012 2:03 am

I've been thinking lately about the numerous records Van Persie has broken this season and the significance of his goalscoring attributes, and it lead me to his future at the club and where he could end up in the legend stakes.

It makes me also think where Van Persie would be if he hadn't had so many injuries. Personally, i think that if he stays, and performs at this level for a few more seasons, he could potentially become our all time top goalscorer. If you think about it rationally then a 30 goal average over the next 3 seasons is not beyond the realms of possibility, is it? Providing he stays fit?

He'll go into our top 5 goalscorers next season with ease in my opinion, and i believe he'll have Wrights record in the bag before long, providing he stays of course.

Then after that, who knows? His game is based on technique, not speed, and you never lose technique, so how long could he be up there? 7 years at least?

I've always had a thought that when leading the line becomes too much for RvP, dropping him deeper would still be hugely effective, it would be effective now, but when he is older, and wiser :cloud9:

We need to keep him at all costs, and we need to keep him fit as well.

I think he'll stay but I don't think he'll score the amount required

Good point about his game relying on technique rather than speed. Owen could only last as long as his speed would allow, technique gets you through into Dennis Bergkamp years.

With the injuries, I know I've said this loads of times but his main problems have been one-offs. The twisted knee and broken foot aren't likely to reappear, and the strains and niggles have come as a result of the long term absences through the one-off injuries. I don't think injury will be an issue in the future.

I agree with mass though, I don't think the goals will always flow so easily, even though he is capable. I think the goals will dry up when we move back to a two-striker formation... which will either be the next year or the year after imo.

I don't think so, Henry was in our best team ever, RVP's in one of our worst squads for a while

If he stays he'll easily be our 2nd all time scorer, but passing Henry would be a long shot.

I don't see him overtaking Henry. 3 years of 30+ goals after the age 29, let alone any age... hard to see that. If he were able to stay healthy and maybe stuck around till 34-35 then maybe. I could see it if he had 5-6 more years in him. Not in the next 3 though.
This space used to be more fun...

Hey, I know it's good to dream, and think positive and all that.

But let's just get him happy and signed up first.

After that, he can pretty much do whatever he pleases imo.

David Dein on Rocky Rocastle.

I wonder what Gazidis would have said......

I think as he gets older, he'll drop deeper again. Bergkamp was far less prolific in his later years for us.

I think he has to lead this team to some silverware first before we started wanking him off and call him a legend.

Cesc Fabregas apparently told Robin, which he quoted in an interview, that Fabregas thought the only reason we didn't win trophys before he left was the team didn't have a fit Van Persie at its disposal.

Once upon a time on here I raised the question could RVP be as good as Bergkamp.

I was run out of town for blasphemy...

He'll never be as legendary as Bergkamp. He could score a hat-trick in every match for us until he's 40 and I'll still rate Bergkamp higher...

Tall order. But you never know. Depends on what is around him too.
I want Carl Jenkinson back in a Arsenal shirt next season.
