The Missing Link

Now I've told myself I wasn't going to get caught up in all the hysteria flying around left and right on this forum since last night's win and I would keep a level head about it. But...

Robin Van Persie has now scored 12 goals in his last 10 appearances for Arsenal...

Take a minute to think about that...

When was the last time we saw a return like that, for that long of a period, from anybody in an Arsenal shirt? How often does anybody do that, in any league, anywhere? Let alone in one of the toughest leagues in the world, against the best competition... (I'm sure starman will let us know)

Add on top of all of this, he's coming back from being out more or less all of 2010. Making something like a 15-20 appearances including national games, then coming back and being in better form than just about anybody in the world. He really is phenomenal.

I've said it before, and I still maintain the opinion that he isn't a player that you can make the cornerstone of your squad because of his injury history. But Jesus if the man could just stay healthy for more than 20 games out of a season... what a legend he could be.

Indeed. Fingers crossed and all that, it's not like he has a chronic injury that always comes back. He always breaks / ruptures / tears something different.

Apart from his goal last night which was sick, he actually had one of his more average games. Could have scored 3 or 4. His first chance was exactly the kind he usually smashes in leaving the keeper nowhere and he should have done better with the one he hit wide. It hasn't been mentioned much but late on Bendtner had it and all he had to do was pass to RVP on the edge of the box and it would have been 3-1, that could have huge going into the second leg

He usually takes some time to find his range, after two or three miscues I always think his next one will go in, and it did vs Barca. He really could be up there with the best in the world right now.

The sad truth is, RVP out with a long injury = no pots. RVP on form all season = very good chance of a pot.

It's like night and day with him, which makes selling him all the more difficult.

I've never said he should be sold, I've always said he can't be the focal point of our team though. And you can't plan to build a squad around his presence, and I still maintain that stance. As I said in the OP.

But Jesus is the man just incredible. It takes a rare talent to do what he's done. And I have to applaud that.

I honestly believe that with the time in the squad at full fitness that Henry had, RVP could seriously challenge his record. Problem is, he's always missing, just coming back from injury or playing with a knock... hardly ever 100%. Which doesn't help is goal ratio for the stat obsessed out there. But as far as class is concerned, he's right up there with the best to wear the shirt.

Over the last 4 season he's averaged at 27 games per season, with 16 goals and 8 assists. That's a goal every 1.75 games, and overall creating or scoring a goal in nearly every game. So he has shown consistency, it's just the same old issue of injuries.

On his current game/goal ratio, he'd be considered the best in the world if he kept it up.

Drogba's past it.
Anelka is wank!
Torres is inconsistent even without injruies.
Rooney is inconsistency personified.

Tevez is the only striker in the Prem that can match a fully fit RvP. And RvP's current form and games/goal ratio is better than David Villa's.

RvP: 1 goal every 1.5 games
Villa: 1 goal every 1.7 games

Found this little gem in the Opta twitter feeds...

3 - Clint Dempsey has hit 3 shots on target in 5 separate PL games this term, only Robin van Persie (6) has managed this more often. Tester.

That's impressive when you consider the fact that RVP has missed significant time. He's had 3 or more shots on target in a single match more often than any other player in the EPL...
