The point was he was really hurt about how the crowd treated him. So much so that he said 'he will not stay long in the sport'.
Then you look at the comments and it's all these people saying he deserved it, that he was provoking the fans, that he has too much disdain for the ball kids, that he acts like a villain, etc...
Seems to be a recurring theme that when you start playing competitively against Rafa/Roger you get branded a villain by their toxic fanbase.
There also seems to be a nationality aspect to it because you won't get this treatment in Shangai, Indian Wells etc...
I think It's time to move one grand slam to Asia and away from the West. It's completely unfair that you have to play 4 out 4 slams against actively hostile crowds.
It's happened for years around all the GS tournaments. The French are notorious for it see Hingis vs Graff, at Wimbledon you have your Federer / Murray die hard fans, and at the US Open it never takes much for the crowd to go mental. It's herd mentality really.
Some of the stuff this year has stemmed from the Kyrgios "Siuuuuu" celebrations and I think Medvedev got the idea they were booing him during his match with Nick and that may have influenced his own behaviour and it snowballed from there. The irony was they had members of the crowd ejected in the men's doubles final (featuring Kyrgios) yesterday because it all got a bit hyper.
You're right though, Med has come along and started to slap their favourite players and they don't like it too much but you really need a thick skin and to knuckle down and plow through it like Novak has.
Thought his speech post match was also good. He's a good guy really.
