Woods, Bolt and Schumacher - all 3 absolutely dominated their sports more than anyone ever thought imaginable. Bolt particularly doing the unprecedented and Woods made golf even a remotely popular sport again.

Many up there that could be in for a shout like Phelps but some shouldn't even be close - Zidane f.e.

Bryant - top player but LeBron also up there, both 2 of the best to ever play but when you can hardly separate them then neither can be the greatest. Rules out Tim Duncan too.
Federer - love the man but same as above, you've got Nadal and whilst Federer was largely unparalleled for most of his career, especially in terms of style, I think the likes of Nadal and Djokovic are close and rule him out from being the greatest outside of tennis.

Was tempted:
Messi/Ron - same story, both absolutely ridiculous players and I'm sure Messi will get his fair share of votes. Hard not to consider them tbh. Zidane, Dinho ruled out.
Brady/Manning - Brady is the GOAT NFL player for sure, there's no debate between Manning, Rodgers and Brady imo he has smashed all competition. Another to be considered but ultimately fall short.
Money Mayweather - up there for being unrivaled in his sport, except by another man on the list..little Manny. Both out.

Another suggestion for the list would be Phil Taylor - dunno what you wana class as 'athlete' but he's another who dominated his sport for almost 20 years. Could've thrown a couple NZ rugby players into the mix as well- Carter, Lomu.

Yeah, agree. I was just trying to extend the list - 'Dinho, Zidane, Duncan etc. are just filler.

I'll trim it.

1. Ronaldo
2. Roger Fed
3. Bolt

Don't think that theirs a right answer to this question because I doubt anyone here watches all the sports and events these athletes are featured in, even if you watch them all you can't watch enough of the others to fairly assess them all.

Yeah I agree. I based my picks on people i've watched a lot over the years.

Know nothing about the NFL guys. Phelps and Woods are sick but i've only ever really watched them a handful of times during big events.

P.s Mesut bringing up Phil Taylor made me laugh :rofll: Just no mate.

Picking 3 was the easy part.

Deciding in what order those 3 go was the tough part

Ronaldo - GOAT footballer. Unrivalled this century and arguably any century. What hes achieved for clubs and country, a country I might add that has done f all and are never favourites is phenomenal. Has done It in England and Spain for biggest clubs in their respective lands meaning much pressure on him and he has to be at his best. Has challenged himself to be the best wherever his and not settle for comfort zone and genuinely think if he was allowed, he'd switch nationality to Gibraltar, San Marino, Scotland or someone of that calibre and make them champions. Only Pele really rivals him as GOAT but Pele is from another century so he can GTFO

Bolt - In an era where drugs rule in his sport, he has been the shining light. World records galore. Destroyed anyone and everyone who has come up against him. Can take time off for injury giving hope to other pubbers and comes back and walks to gold. Greatest Olympian of all time

Federer - Pete Sampras was good. His record of 14 slams would stand for a long time. Then came Federer. Beautiful game he has. Can do it all. Done f all since 2012 but still gets regularly to latter stages of Slams. Hope he wins one more.

Not on the list criminally but Sachin Tendulkar, greatest cricketer of all time. Better than most on the list. Especially the American pubbers but fair enough. Could play all types. Sensational player and to get 100 centuries is phenomenal and got the world cup as well. He didn't need it to be GOAT but its a nice cherry on top

John Cena 15 time world champion for a guy you couldn't see. Has to be in

Bolt. Raised the bar for his sport and broke world records while not even running at full speed

There's pre-Bolt sprinting and post-Bolt sprinting.
