Maynard dies at 23

Postby Trina » Mon Jun 18, 2012 5:16 pm

Saw this on SSN earlier, such a shame and so young too.

Surrey have confirmed that England Lions cricketer Tom Maynard has died aged just 23.

Maynard is understood to have lost his life after being struck by a District Line train in the early hours of Monday morning.

British Transport Police confirmed that a 23-year-old, named locally as Maynard, had passed away following the accident in London.

A BTP spokesman said: "BTP officers were called to the line near Wimbledon Park London Underground station on Monday, 18 June after a man was struck by a District line train.

"The incident was reported to BTP at 5.03am and was also attended by Metropolitan Police officers.

"London Ambulance Service medics attended but the man, believed to be 23 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The incident was reported to BTP at 5.03am and is currently being treated as non-suspicious. A file will be prepared for the coroner."

The right-handed batsman, son of former England opener Matthew Maynard, began his professional career at Glamorgan, making his debut against Somerset in 2007.

However, following his father's acrimonious split from the Welsh county, Maynard opted to sign a three-year deal with Surrey in 2011.

Maynard made a big impression at the Oval - especially in the limited overs games - with his form earning him a call-up for the England Performance squad's winter tour to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
Senseless tragedy

In his first season at Surrey, Maynard helped guide the club to the CB 40 title and promotion back to Division One of the County Championship.

As a mark of respect, Surrey's Friends Life t20 home game against the Hampshire Royals, that was scheduled for this Wednesday, June 20th, has been postponed.

Surrey Chairman Richard Thompson said: "Our thoughts at this awful time are with Tom's family and friends and all those that were close to him.

"Tom Maynard was a prodigiously talented young batsman who had made an incredible start to his career and was clearly destined for far greater things.

"The impact Tom made in such a short period of time for Surrey CCC spoke for itself. There is a profound sense of loss at the passing of Tom. To lose anybody at such a young age is an utterly senseless tragedy."

ECB Chairman Giles Clarke added: "This is a very sad day for everyone connected with Surrey County Cricket club and for Glamorgan County Cricket club where Tom spent the early part of his career.

"Tom was a player of enormous potential who had already represented England Lions and had an exciting future ahead of him.

"Our hearts go out to the Maynard family for their tragic loss and we send them and all Tom's many friends and colleagues within the game our deepest sympathies."

No disrespect to him... But it begs the question, why was he driving erratically? And why did he get out and flee Police, on foot?

Also [if Police are to be believed] they were nowhere near him, when he got hit by the train almost an hour after fleeing them...

EDIT: Also notice none of that, is mentioned in there... Strange.

He was playing at Beckenham Cricket Ground, yesterday, against Kent and that game would have ended about 8-9pm...
