Baseball

Postby AZGooner » Sat Feb 19, 2011 1:16 am

Anyone here watch baseball? "America's pastime" is my favorite sport, and spring training is underway. It's my favorite time of the year. As a Texas Rangers fan, I'm super excited for this new season. Especially coming off a World Series appearance.

Anyone else fans of the game?

It was always my far and away favorite sport growing up... to play. I can't watch it though, and the way the league is a 3-4 horse race every year is boring. Add on top of that there are 162 games, it gets hard to be excited about it.

I still love the game though. Played every summer up until about 4 or 5 years ago, it got too hard to find enough guys that still wanted to play hardball. I even had a job at an indoor batting cage in high school so I could practice year round, and get paid as a bonus.

And for the record, I'm a Cleveland Indians fan.

I know ChVint is a Cards fan too.

I wouldn't say it's 3-4 team race every year. Just look at last year. Nobody would've predicted a Rangers/Giants World Series. I think the league is more open now than it has been in the last 20 years or so. Anyone can make the right changes and compete at any given time. Heck, the Marlins have already won the World Series twice. Anything can happen.

3-4 may have been a bit of an overstatement...

But it's the same teams most years.

The Yankees and Red Sox in the AL east, Rays are a contender for now but they'll fall off when the stars start wanting money.
The AL Central is a toss up, but rarely get anywhere in the playoffs.
AL west is the Angels or Rangers.
The NL East was the Braves every year for about 20 years in a row until the recent rise of the Phillies
Cubs and Cards is the Central, Reds have had a couple decent teams
West is the Dodgers and Giants.

Every year there is the rise of a small market team for a season or two, then they fall off when the youth the bring up gets recognized by the big clubs...

It's boring to me. You have it different because the Rangers are in an upswing now... much like the appeal was much stronger to me when I was younger and the Indians had some good teams. But the money will dry up, the team will need to be rebuilt because the younger underpaid players will become free agents and it all starts over again. They cycle is old boring and repetitive to me.

And as I said, I find it impossible to follow for 162 games when the significance of one game is almost non-existent. I'll turn it on if there is nothing else to watch, but I couldn't care less otherwise.

I mean Christ... my club was the first ever to trade the defending Cy Young award winners in back to back years (CC Sabathia and Cliff Lee)... why the hell would I give two shits about the sport when it's so money dependent that a team can't afford to keep the players they develop. In the past decade we've brought up some tremendous young players only to have the club be a revolving door. It's a waste of time imo.

And trust me, I LOVE the game... just hate the league. I come from a massive baseball family. My father played college baseball and is in the Greater Akron Baseball Hall of Fame, I play semi pro ball in Canton, OH during and after college (I was one of the unpaid) and my cousin was a professional player in Italy. It breaks my heart the way the league is so screw up beyond belief.

Read Bob Costas's book... he explains everything I hate about the game in there.

funny you mention Costas. i've met him and he's a really down to earth guy. really cool in person.

i wouldn't say i'm eager for baseball because i'm a Ranger fan. hell, we had so many bad teams in the past. heck, we had never even made a WS appearance until last year. even so, each year going into March i'd get that urge. even if i knew we had no chance i'd always believe. living in Arizona lately, i've ben able to appreciate Spring Training, and the idea of going to games and watching the boys getting ready for the year.

I know the feeling... I've just become very jaded over the years.

I wish I still had the passion for the game I used to, those were great memories.

Never played or followed Baseball, was well into American Football back in the days of Emmit Smith and Glen Rice.

I was a rounders triple threat back in my primary school days, used to knock tennis balls out of the park and was thee fourth base king!! :Peace:

Rounders is a game played in school here, the bat is smaller and instead of bases we have posts. same square set up and thrower although we dont wear gloves and hats.

Season hasn't even started yet and we're already f***ked. Just lost our number 1 pitcher for the year, and the best player in baseball is due for free agency at the end of it, and our owners probably can't afford to keep him. Dark days ahead for my beloved Cardinals. :BangHead: :crybaby:
