Favourite moments of sporting commentary

Postby Gunflash » Sat Oct 10, 2009 1:43 pm

We all love our sport but on many occasions it's not just the events on the pitch, track etc. but the commentators lines. Obviously as Arsenal fans we all love Brian Moore's "It's up for grabs now" but I thought we could have a thread of classic commentary moments. I'll start with a few that I like.

"Oh my God, he's won the title back at 32"
- Harry Carpenter, after Muhammad Ali beat George Foreman in the Rumble in the Jungle

Murray Walker: If he can just do these last 2.5 miles, he is going to have won this race four years in...
Martin Brundle: He's slowing down Murray!
- The last lap of the 2001 Spanish Grand Prix when Hakkinen's clutch exploded

"Interesting. Very interesting! Oh look at his face! Look at his face!"
- Barry Davies, after Francis Lee scored for Derby against Man City

"That didn't work Michael. You've hit the wrong part of him my friend"
- Martin Brundle, after Schumacher's collision with Villeneuve in 1997

"Stuart Pearce is in tears and I thought he was supposed to be a hard man"
- Brian Moore, after England were knocked out of the 1990 World Cup (You need Brian Moore today. He'd put a stop to this self-indulgent crying of modern footballers.)

"Look at that! And colossally that's Mansell! That is Nigel Mansell!"
- Murray Walker, when Mansell's tyre exploded in Adelaide in 1986

"This is too much like a fairy story. They're 2-1 down and they're embracing"
- John Motson, after Blackburn won the league in 1995

"No"
- Ted Lowe, after Steve Davis missed the cut back on the final black against Dennis Taylor

"Apart from their goals, Norway haven't scored."
Terry Venables

"Both sides have scored a couple of goals, and both sides have conceded a couple of goals."
Peter Withe during a radio commentary

"For those of you watching in black and white, S***s are in the all-yellow strip"
John Motson

"If that had gone in, it would have been a goal."
David Coleman

"If you cut Jamie Carragher open, he’ll bleed red."
Clive Tyldesley

"Chris Waddle is off the pitch at the moment – exactly the position he is at his most menacing.”
Gerald Sinstadt

"We’ll have more football later. Meanwhile, here are the highlights from the Scottish Cup final."
Gary Newbon

"Owen scores and breaks Lineker's competitive scoring record. Although this being a friendly it doesn't actual count, so he hasn't quite done it yet."
John Motson

Damn, which was the blood bath, there was a cracking quote at the end of that one. I can't think of the fight nor the quote though....

I was gonna say that. Also when Bergkamp scored against Argentina and the commenator went absolutely mad.

I like John Motson's commentary from Italia 90 when Baggio scored against Czechoslovakia. It seemed to take his breath away and just for a few seconds he couldn't say anything after his initial response -

"OH................................................That's a fantastic goal"

Bjorge Lillelien (after Norway's 2-1 win over England in 1981) reeling of a list of famous English people culminating with:

"Maggie Thatcher, can you hear me? Maggie Thatcher...your boys took a hell of a beating!"

Lillelien was well known for his crazy commentaries and you have to admire his knowledge of historical English figures. I doubt if a British commentator would know who the Norwegian prime minister was.
