US Open Tennis 2009

Postby Gunflash » Thu Aug 27, 2009 5:43 pm

So the final Grand Slam of the year starts on Monday. It should be an interesting event.

Can Federer become the first man since William "Big Bill" Tilden in the 1920s to win six straight US Open titles? That'd be some achievement when you consider how competitive modern tennis is and how Federer was psychologically broken in Australia when Nadal outlasted him. It's amazing how quickly things can turn round in sport.

What of Murray? He reached the final last year. Can he go one better now? He has a tough draw (if everything goes according to plan he'd have to beat Karlovic, Del Potro and Nadal, amongst others) but he's playing well.

Nadal has a slight bastard of a first round draw - he's playing Gasquet. Nadal winning the title, after the injury problems he's had, would probably be a greater feat than Murray winning it.

Will Roddick be able to keep up his form from Wimbledon?

As for the women's draw, a polite request: can someone please grow some balls (not literally!) and beat Serena Williams?

Marat Safin has played his final Grand Slam match after being beaten in the US Open. I always felt that if he had kept his head, Safin could have been a match for Federer during the Fed's supreme years from 2004-7. I'll never forget his epic win over Federer in the semi-final of the 2005 Australian Open. Nevertheless, Marat, you won the US Open, you won the Australian Open, you were world number one and you were a bit of a nut. But you were a bloody great tennis player! Marat, I salute you!

Nadal hammered Gasquet. There was me thinking that would be a tough match. By all accounts, Rafa was brilliant. If Rafa wins the US Open, he'll match Federer's career Grand Slam. I wonder if two career Grand Slams have ever been completed in the same year.

Federer won the French Open this year, meaning he's won every Grand Slam, and if Nadal wins the US Open this year, he'll also have won every Grand Slam. So exciting to have two brilliant players playing at the same time! Nadal could even start challenging Federer's new Grand Slam record eventually.
