Golf Tips Please!

Postby gzagee » Thu Apr 02, 2009 7:05 pm

Several lads from work have decided to have a jolly at the end of the month. It'll be somewhere near Swanley or Richmond Park, I think.

Should be a laugh. Can't wait!

So what do I need to know? What's the difference between a 4 iron and a wood? Can I wear trainers (sneakers)? Apparently it's not 'etiquette' to wear denim?
Are there fit birds serving drinks?

Never played the game before so if any of you's have and can share some knowledge, please do.

Get on your knees and pray that you don't look like a fool.

No trainers, you should get some proper golf shoes, no denim, and usually a polo type shirt. Your woods are for distance, 1 wood (or Driver) off the tee box on most par 4's and par 5's. 3 wood and 5 woods for long shots out of the fairway, probably shots that are over 200 yards away. Anything under 200 yards you usually use your irons, your lowest iron is usually a 3 iron, but some carry a 2 and I've even seen a 1. The lower the iron number, the farther the ball should go. You'll use your pitching wedge and sand wedge for shots when you're near the green, or some call it chipping, and obviously your sand wedge for hitting out of the sand trap.

There is a boat load more to explain, but you should get by with knowing that. I'd go to the driving range and hit as many balls as you can with every club in your bag just so you can get the hang of it. Good luck buddy!!!

Definately, but since you've never played before, I would try to go to the driving range as much as possible before you play. Golf is one of the hardest games in the world....... no pressure though. :P

That's just your good luck. It's one of the crassest movies of all time, whoever told Sandler he was funny needs to be taken out and shot.

You need to wear some sort of shirt with a collar. Also no jeans or singlet tops and i believe there is a rule if you wear your hat into the club rooms then you have to shout everyone in there a beer. But i'll have to seek confirmation on that rule?
Best idea is the ring the club you are going to and ask what dress code they have as different clubs can be stricter than others.

Oh and you need at least 4 clubs (putter, driver, couple of irons) and a bag to play i believe but some clubs will allow sharing and at most you can hire clubs.
As said before ring the club and ask them.

get down to the driving range immediatley! If you rock up having not played before you will struggle to hit the ball, and spend half your day searching for balls. I've been playing for 8 or so years, and i still have shockers! most golf courses, well here anyway, have someone driving round on a booze cart between holes so drink up. and a cart is a must, walking 18 holes is just plain stupid, that would count as exercise or something.

I've played beer a hole before, drove the cart into a tree even before i got onto the back 9

Just been advised to take a 7 iron(?) to the driving range. Apparently it's best for someone like me as it makes it easier to hit it up and down. True or not?
