20/20 cricket

Postby Reverend Gooner » Tue Jul 08, 2008 10:26 pm

Cricket fans i saw a blinder today at the Oval in the quarter final 20/20 cup between Middlesex and Lancashire.

Middlesex batted first and were battered down to 21-4, it looked like an absolute destruction that could be over in no time but then fifth place batsman Malan comes on and gets 103 in 54 balls.

Absolutely amazing! He had three overs where he scored over 20 himself. In the end Middlesex ended on 175-7 which is incredible from where they were.

Flintoff took an impressive 3-17 however two of the wickets came off the last 3 balls so it flattered him a little. Very economical though.

Middlesex then bowled Lancashire down to 14-3 but despite a Flintoff 53 they could not match the Middlesex middle stint and lost by 12 runs in the end although were struggling for much of their innings.

Anyway it was amazing to see a century in a 20/20 and it was an exciting match. I know purists hold 20/20 with disdain but i have to say that they despite it's crude nature they can be bloody fun to watch.

Cricket fans what do you think of the 20/20 format?

20/20 is the only stuff I can really watch. It's exciting and they need to attack, the five day things just bore the balls off me.

I can watch cricket in any form, but 20/20 is by far the most exciting, it's just action all the way.

Hats off to whoever invented it!

He was amazing, he came in at 21-4 and it was one of those times where you think he has to do something amazing but i doubt it could be done.

However he did it and then some, he ate the spinners alive, that Depleussis guy was humiliated. I have never managed to see a century in any test or ODI i have seen but i have seen one in a 20/20, how funny is that :)

To make it even better he bowled one over for 0-3 just to make him the most economical bowler and he took the catch which got out Flintoff, what a day!

I hear you Mikey about the all day session, the only trouble with the Oval is that you cannot bring any alcohol in with you, not even 4 cans, so it is expensive from the off. Good times and great atmosphere though.

The same applies at Trent Bridge, although they do seem to turn a bind eye. Plus inside that ground is The Trent Bridge Inn, which can be entered from the street or from the ground, but partitioned in the middle, so you pay "normal" prices at the bar there.....

I would love to go to Trent Bridge, my friend says it is very beautiful and cosy ground to watch cricket in.

It's not as big as The Oval, certainly.

If you are aware of Nottingham, it's in the West Bridgeford area, close to Trent Bridge itself, and right over the road from both football grounds, within a few minutes walk of both The City Centre and train station, so it's really easy to get to, and there is plenty of street parking available.

Not sure about the capacity, but I would guess at maybe 12,000. It's been quite well redeveloped over the last few years, and reasonably modern. One thing about that place is that every time I go, someone always manages to have a crap in the urinals!

It's worth a look on Google Earth, if you have it, the whole set up with the football grounds being so close is quite unique. (I think it's in the NG2 postcode area of The City)
