UAE backheel penalty taker to be punished.

Postby Est83 » Wed Jul 20, 2011 1:25 am

The scorer of a back-heeled penalty, who has become an internet sensation as a result, is facing possible disciplinary action from the United Arab Emirates Football Association.

Awana Diab stole the headlines in the UAE's 6-2 friendly defeat of Lebanon on Sunday for his 78th-minute penalty, which he slotted home with his heel after running backwards towards the spot. He was shown a yellow card at the time – although his offence was unclear – and now the UAE's team manager has hinted at a sanction.

Esmaeel Rashed told the newspaper the National: "This should not have happened. I think what happened is disrespectful. We cannot accept anyone in our team who does not respect the opponent and does not respect the people who are working, or the supporters. There are many forms of punishment. We could send him away from the team. We could make him pay a fine."

The coach, Srecko Katanec, was also unimpressed, immediately substituting the player after the penalty, only 10 minutes after sending him on. "This is not respect, OK? I am unhappy. My reaction was normal: I took him out," he said.

Rashed has spoken to Awana and claims the 21-year-old Baniyas midfielder is full of remorse for his actions. Rashed said: "The player, he is very sorry. He said: 'I did wrong. I made a mistake. Tell the team I'm sorry. I'm really, really sorry I did this thing.'

"In the end, he's young, but he has to know what are the good things and the bad things. I think he will learn from this moment. He's really, really upset and very worried. From when he was sitting with us today, he's blaming himself."

There's a video on the link. It's just a shit version of Totti's freekick really, if the keeper had a bit more patience he would have got it.

... is it really that disrespectful?

they all need to harden the f**k up
if that's disrespectful, then so is nutmegging a player, so is chipping the keeper, so is dummying the ball... what rules are they breaking?
more proof that football in the Middle East is a joke

That's like that Columbian GK who done the scorpio kick at Wembley against England in the final...
And at least that Pen trick worked.Remember Pires and Henry debacle?

 That whole Pires & Henry thing was just embarassing!

But I really dont see the whole fuss about this? Players dont get discaplined for doing step-overs to get past players of other skillful tricks during a game so why should this lad be punished differently?

The reason they're upset is because of the scoreline.

They were winning 6-2 at the time so they feel that the penalty was rubbing their noses in it, taking the piss a bit.
If the penalty taker was on the side that were losing the game then no-one would've complained probably.

It's still a massive overreaction though. Punishing him would be a joke.

yeah, bottom line is, if you don't want to have your noses rubbed in it, don't go down 6-2
if you do, then really you should expect to have the other team take the piss out of you, and you should harden the f**k up and get on with life

Exactly! These might have once got the same reaction... wont be long before we play the whole game backwards with backheels for every kick :hiding: no of course not, but you get what I'm saying.

Also, good advice on the whole not going 6-2 down thing. Invaluable advice

Fair enough if he wants to be a show off and take a penalty like that but if I was a player on the opposition he would get smashed next time he got with ten feet of the ball.

It would be like saying Henry's penalty against City (I think it was him?) is disrespectful. Although he missed so looked a bit silly. End of the day, you can do what you like IMO.
This is how it feels to be City

I watched this on SSN earlier and thought the same.

If they wasn't winning by that margin, I doubt he would have done it. Don't see a problem with it.
