Former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas has admitted he wants Robin van Persie to stay and win trophies with the Gunners.
Van Persie inherited the armband from Fabregas last summer after he left Emirates Stadium and returned to his boyhood club Barcelona.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is now having to deal with speculation over the future of the Dutchman – Fabregas shares his old boss’ desire for last season’s top-scorer to stay with the Gunners and lift the club’s first trophy in seven years.
As a fan of Arsenal, nothing would make me happier if he became the first captain to lift a trophy in eight or however many years it is for them,” he told reporters.
Fabregas’ move to Camp Nou last season, coupled with the sale of Samir Nasri to Manchester City, sparked a period of uncertainty at the north London club and has been named as the biggest reason behind their calamitous start to the season.
They recovered admirably, however, and a third placed finish this year guarantees them Champions League football next year, but they will be desperate to avoid losing one of the club’s top players for a second summer in a row.
Fabregas is preparing for Spanish football’s season finale on Friday and the Copa del Rey final against Europa League runners up Athletic Bilbao – it is Barcelona’s last chance of silverware this season and under departing manager Pep Guardiola.
