Who am I missing?

Postby FatSadGooner » Sun May 13, 2012 9:17 am

I'm thinking about next season's squad

I make it

Szczesny
Fabianski

Sagna
Jenkinson
Koscielny
Vermaelen
Mertesacker
Djourou
Gibbs
Santos

Arteta
Song
Wilshere
Rosicky
Ramsey
Frimpong
Coquelin
Lansbury

Van Persie
Podolski
Walcott
Oxlade-Chamberlain
Gervinho
Miyaichi

Now some of those are still underage, and don't count towards the 25 man squad.

So given the fact that we're only likely to make one, possibly two, other signings, there are a couple of questions on my mind:

1) Are we likely to go into next season with a short squad?
2) What can that squad possibly hope to achieve?
3) How good is it against the other sides in the Premiership?

Looking at it, I see City, Utd, Spurs, Chelsea, and possibly Liverpool having better squads by the middle of August.

Time to take a deep breath and start enjoying being a mid table club for a few seasons.

What have I missed? Where's the reason for optimism?

I could do with cheering up, here.

'I ran home immediately to my wife in excitement and said, 'I've seen the nearest thing to a Brazilian footballer you'll ever see in our Academy…..and he's from Lewisham!'

David Dein on Rocky Rocastle.

I wonder what Gazidis would have said......

Lansbury is in your list so I would add: Bartley, J. Campbell, Miquel and possibly Aneke.

BTW, where is Diaby?

We finished 12th in 95. 6 points from relegation.
I'm out, pushed before I could jump.
It was fun.

Liverpool having a better squad? You high?

To answer your questions...

1) Yes, as always
2) Probably top 4, as always
3) Better than about 15, worse than about 3 on par with about 1

Liverpool will spend money on improving their squad. All the unbiased pundits thought their squad looked pretty good on paper before the start of this season. We were just lucky that they have such a shit manager - long may he reign. :sneaky2:

I don't see why we should get '..top 4, as always' by default. We proved this season that we are just a couple of bad results away from 6th place.

RVP has proven to be a very good captain. Listening to what he said after the match today, I'm thinking he may well be setting us up for a farewell speech sometime soon. Even if he stays we need a leader in the defense.

Hearing on Talksport Comolli saying how good Pat Rice was as a defensive coach, makes me wonder how much Wenger is going to listen to Bould in his new role.

Our defense is getting worse year on year.

We don't have enough goals in our midfield.

Our fullbacks have no idea how to defend, especially positionally.

Our midfield has no idea how to protect our defense.

Yup I'm already expecting the worst. I find nothing to celebrate in getting third if the extra money earned in the CL is not spent on strengthening the squad.

the unbiased pundits are wrong then
Adam, Henderson, Downing, Carroll, Johnson etc are all extremely overrated

Why include the deadwood and the permanently crocked?

You're right though, I shouldn't have included Lansbury, he's an underage player and won't be in the 25, will he.

That makes our squad about 21 or 22 adult players.

Great.

In hindsight, yes, but last July most were saying they could become the backbone of a good team.

The important thing is that they were the players that Dalglish wanted, and the club went and got them early for him. Unlike our last minute panic buys.

I still think Carroll will become a good player over the next 24 months.

For once in my life I don't think I want what this guys smoking. We just got third spot after our worst start to a season in decades, why, within hours of that are we talking about mid table and finishing below sides we just comfortably finished above

Our squad is a fourth place squad, I've said that since September 1st. I've also maintained we add 4 quality players (defender, 2 midfielders and striker) and we'd be able to challenge for the title next year.
Given we've signed Podolski and we're strongly linked to Vertonghen, M'Vila and a host of talented AM's I don't see reason for negativity. We've just overcome a tough season with a poor squad, I can't see any way but up now. We have money, our fans have voiced their disproval all season and our performances should finally prove to Wenger and the board that it's time for a change in focus and time to start spending and strengthening.

I think we'll sign 3 quality players and have a very good squad for next season. If we don't then Wenger shouldn't be in charge next summer.
Why do people say Liverpool will improve every season btw :dontknow:

some big signings, Bould in as assitant, improve the defensive organisation, get our key players fit and we could start next year a real chance of silverware. The worst should most certainly be behind us now, and there's no reason it shouldn't be other than if our board continue to rape us for their own financial gains (in which case we should be rioting outside highbury).
