87 season, can't really remember the game but the climax in the final and Charlie breaking the Rush hoodoo was pretty special.

Back when the league cup really meant something.

My memories of my first game go way back probably long before most of you lot were born!Don't know why but for some reason my old man decided it would be a good idea to take me to a night match,I can remember how cold it was.We got off the train at Highbury & Islington came out by the Cock Tavern and walked what seemed forever to Highbury.
I can remember two things as clear as a bell, the fist was the smell,of hot dogs and burgers the second was the people!Sooo many!I'd never seen that amount in my 5 years of life!As we walked down Avenell Road my eyes were everywhere looking at all the new things on show!As we got to the turnstiles at the 'Clock End' my Dad lifted me up,'He's only three' he said and pushed his way through!
We were in!I could hear this buzz but didn't know where it was coming from then we entered the terraces, once again i didn't know what it was all about until we settled near the front and i saw this green muddy pitch with all flood-lights blazing.
After a short while a massive roar came up as the players took to the field,my Dad had now moved us both nearer to the front.
The game kicked off but i didn't really understand what i was supposed to be looking at as everything was going so fast then :goal1: What was that? I thought as everyone was cheering (including the old boy).Well it happened again this time the roar was slightly muffled and everyone around me was using a language i had rarely heard!
The big roar came back later when another :goal1: was scored very late on,the old boy was once again happy.

The final score was:The Arsenal 2 v Charlton Athletic 1,Joe Baker scored both goals it was October 17th 1963!!

GOONER FOR EVER!!1 :arse fan: :arse fan: :arse fan: :arse fan: :arse fan: :arse fan: :arse fan: :arse fan:

The memory i have of the first game i went to is pretty foggy TBH but i`ll try......

Cant remember what year it was, late 70`s sometime. It was against crysal palace and about 5 mins after me and my mates got in the northbank, it all kicked off..A airhorn was let off and a big roar of "palace" went up. The northbank opened up in the middle and loads of palace fans came charging down from the back. Me and my mates got split up and i got the biggest clump iv ever had from this palace fan. The northbank then closed in and it was fisty cuffs everywhere. The next thing i remember is this massive fella grabbing me, at this point i was pantsing it, and then he said "you alright son". Turns out he was Arsenal. I was then evicted from the ground. Could`nt find me mates and did`nt have a clue how to get home :crybaby: .....And that was my first memory of Highbury

does march 1980 sound about right?
i would have been in the east lower by then in my season ticket so terrace fracas had become a thing of the past for me
i was a mod by then so i would,nt want to f**k up my jam shoes on a palace fan.
brady scored his last goal for us at highbury that day.
good to have another old git on the firm

i had a season ticket in the east lower when we turned that hajduk split result around in the uefa cup. there was no live european football at the time only finals[and not even the uefa cup final even if a british side was in it].i listened to our away games on radio london sportsnight or midweek sports special chose 1 game to show highlights of and that week it was notts for v aek athens.it did make for a real hunger for televised football though.
you watched everything that was fed to you with great excitement

It must seem funny to those that have been brought up with Sky showing a live game every day of the week.
As i recall it, we used to get the FA Cup Final, England v Scotland and the European Cup Final (although only if an English team was in the final) and that was it for live football coverage.

Not forgetting that MOTD on Saturday night only showed highlights from 2 games (no other goals) and The Big Match (or whatever ITV regional variation you had) on a Sunday afternoon showed a different two, usually from the lower leagues, but occasionally top flight.

We did also get Sportsnight on BBC on a Wednesday night that had mainly boxing, but occasional highlights of something like an FA Cup replay.

Remembering how frankly awful football was back in those days in the first place compared with today, you'd be lucky to see 90 minutes of highlights and a sprinkle of goals, and that was your lot for a week.

Worse than that, if you didn't go to a midweek match, you'd have to wait until the papers the next morning to find out results, and that was only if it finished early enough to make the newspapers. Although Radio 2 did do live commentaries on some Saturday games, if they covered it, that would be the MOTD main coverage for that night.

you are right and for that reason we lapped up live football like oxygen
but every european cup final since 71/72 has been live on the tv apart from bayern munich v athletico madrid in 73/74

I seem to recall that BBC2 only used to show the second half of the European Cup final if there was no English team involved? Maybe not?
Not that it mattered, there was nearly always an English team there after 1975.
