Memories of your first game

Postby gzagee » Wed Dec 30, 2009 2:55 pm

Do you remember going to your first Arsenal match or watching your Arsenal game on TV?

Why not reminicise here and tell your story of how you fell in love and became a Gooner?

Mine was a cold February evening in 1988. We were to play Everton in the Semi Final of the Littlewoods Cup (or Carling Cup).

I'd always wanted to go to this fabled stadium, Highbury, where my older cousin Johnny and his mates Pete and Dean used to go. I wanted to see the Clock. I wanted to be on the North bank.
Caulfield in my year at school was a junior gunner, as were the Doherty brothers (both younger than me). But, my parents weren't having any of it. They said it was full of hooligans and they didn't want to visit their kids in hospital.
Such was the hardship of a kid growing up in an Afrcian household... :(
My chance came when my dad was on holiday in Nigeria and my mum was working night shifts at Mount Pleasant.
We were staying at my cousins' house in Balham and Johnny being the rebel that he was always was going up North London to watch the gunners.
I'd asked him before to try and take me when we stayed at their house but, for one reason or another he just didn't bother.
But my luck was soon to change. Pete managed to get some tickets and I begged and begged my cuz to take me. His younger brother wasn't into footy that much so he finally relented.
Can't remember the route up there but we got off at Finsbury Park, I remember cos we couldn't interchange somewhere else due to the sheer number of peeps (probably Kings X).
We marched down the Blackstock Rd and turned onto Gillespie.
The tingle of anticipation ran through me as I savoured the buzz of the fans mingling. I remember sticking close to my cuz as my as the nightmare storeis from my folks were still fresh in my memory. But i was there! And we were all feeling confident having beat ManUre in the FA Cup.
I bought The Gunner (remember that?!) for about 60p. Dunno how much they are now but I'm sure you can't get it for 60p!!!
We entered through the turnstile at Gillespie Rd and entered the West Stand. That's when it hit me. I can only describe it as seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. As soon as I entered the stand all i could see was the shining floodlights and the noise of the support! The heat rising into the night sky.
It was electric!
Down at the far End I saw the Clock and knew instantly what it was. I now knew my bearings and looked at the Northbank. There is was over to my left.
Don't actually remember that much of the game. I know we were up against a very very good Everton team cos they were league champs, but we were cup holders. Rocky missed a chance in the first half and Martin hayes missed a pen. Adrian Heath scored for them down our end.
All our goals were score up the Clock End I think.

Johnny told me later that it was too risky to have me there on my first match. He was right. The surge- nae stampede at the final whistle was like something on the Sarengeti!
Johnny and the boys ran down, I ran to bottom of the stand and stopped. My parents had trained me well. I wasn't about to test Pc Plod!

So that was it. I'd actually witnessed my heroes in the flesh. Rocky, Mickey Thomas, TA, Kenny Sansom. I went home that night, programme in my jacket, buzzing!

Couldn't wait to get to school to show off to Caulfield and Co that I'd also been to The Arsenal. I was part of that exclusive club. I was hooked. I craved the drug.
Though it would be another year or so until I could feed the habit again.

I can't remember much of my first game, I think it was against Bolton in 2002, we drew 1-1 and Jeffers got our goal, Michael Ricketts scored for them.

I can't remember any of my first game, I was only 3 years old! (The 71 Cup Final)

I started going regularly at the start of the 75/76 season, so I'd probably seen a few dozen games before I can even remember one. I've never seen a home game anywhere other than The North Bank, having the same position on the terrace from around 83 when I was tall enough to see over the mass of bodies in front of me.

I reckon over the years I have clocked up pushing 1000 games, the last home game being the end of the 91/92 season when they pulled The North Bank down. I couldn't really afford it with seats and I refuse to be told to sit at football anyway, so aside from a few away games and a trip to Cardiff, I've hardly seen them in the last 16 or so years.

The first ever match I watched on tv from start to finish was the 1989 Liverpool game with the Thomas goal. Before that I used to find football boring! Turned out I had relatives in London who were Arsenal fans and they sent me down programmes etc. and I joined the Junior Gunners.

They then played a friendly against Argyle in Plymouth in July 1990 and a mate and I went to watch it - the first time I had ever been to a game without my parents. That was the first time I had ever seen Arsenal play live.

I didn't see them play live again until October 1993 when I was ball-boy!

I then watched them beat Villa 2-1 away in 1994 and beat Man Utd 1-0 at Highbury in 1995.

I then couldn't get tickets until we moved to the Emirates. I have been to see them play four times at the emirates.

I must've been about 5/6 years old. I can remember one time vividly when my cousin called Pires, Perez :D.

Oh yes! I *think* only three of us on here were there that night, me being one of them <smug smiley>

And I managed to catch my train the next morning...... Unlike certain other people...... (Still makes me laugh that does!)

My first TV game was the FACup 1979 as i have mentioned before my dad is a Manure fan and wanted me to support them but for a laugh i chose Arsenal and we won. I just remember the feeling after A.Sunderland scored that goal. That was it i was a Gooner.
The first game i went to was away at WestSham 1989 with a few Hammer mates. They told me that they would get me in the Arse end but they didn't. It was a wind up. I had to stand in the WHam end behind the goal with my Arse shirt covered luckily by my claret and blueish Fila tracksuit top.
We won 4 nil and every time we scored i was acting like the WHam fans but screaming "YES" in my head. One of my mates said that he was cold and could i lend him my top and i told him to fook off as he was laughing he head off. Some other Wham fan told me to lend me his top and i said that i was cold too so couldn't. Phew
I remember leaving the game and reversing the wind up back onto my mates by slipping past OldBill and joining the Arse fans travelling to the tube. My Wham mates shit themselves but it was ok. They said it was quite funny getting shit of there fellow fans when arrived at the tube station. Hundreds of angry Whammers screaming abuse at the Tube station.

My first home game was against N.Forest and i will never forget that moment of walking up the stairs towards the Norf Bank and getting to the top and seeing the pitch. the clock end and the whole of our home. The first time you saw that you knew this is where i belong.
We lost that game 4-1 and on MOTD that night when Smudger scored i saw me and my mate (Chelski fan but his first game) going mad with my other mate(Liverfool fan but again his first game) just staring at everyone going mental.
I carried on going regulary until they made it all seater. Attended all champLge games at Wembley and then a few at Highbury thanks to my mate who worked for Amstell beer(free tickets and a couple of VIP treatments).
the last game i went too was the FACup Semi against the Scum at Old Trafford. Quite a messy weekend that one

First couple of seasons as a gooner I used to listen to the matches on the radio, was too skint to make the trip down to Highbury or buy a TV

First match I saw live was a 1-0 defeat to Ipswich in the FA Cup final 1978; don't remember too much, though I remember my Manc dad was supporting Ipswich and I felt like crap after the defeat :(

Oh yes, that glorious moment walking off the Gillespie Road, through those gates, up the stairs and back down the terraces. I think I've kissed quite a few of them in a drunken state over the years!

The only Clock Ender I know is Libs, so would be interested to read an account from that end..... I only ever watched from The NB, I never even went into The East/West or CE in 25+ years.

I went to the 78 and 80 finals, but not that one.

Still cuts me to the core...... :crybaby:

i was lucky enough to be in the northbank for our 1st home game of the 70/71 season when we beat man utd 4-0.best law and charlton et al but 54,000,s were rare in those days unlike now where we get 60,000 3 times in a week on a regular basis.
for the likes of man city, sparta prague and portsmouth.
man city were a 34,000 team at highbury as were sparta prague
portsmouth 39,000.
sevilla, derby and newcastle all attracted 60,000 to the emirates in a week
newcastle and derby were 35,000 teams[though the biggest crowd i was ever in at home was for an fa cup replay in 1972 63,000 v derby] the 2-45 kick off on a tuesday because of power strikes seemed to attract every schoolboy in london.i was in a season ticket in the east lower now after having to be taken home by my grandad from the clockend the season before[62,000 was too much for a 7 year old] v chelsea.
sheff utd, hull and porto attracted 59,000 av to the emirates last season
at highbury sheff utd were a 32,000 team
hull a 22 ,000 team
fenerbahce, man utd, wigan cc and aston villa all attracted 60,000 to the emirates in 10 days last season.
at highbury fenerbahce were a 35,000 team
villa a 33,000 team
wigan a 36,000 team
and utd a 40,000 team.
this season we had liverpool, spurs and alkmaar with 60,000 for each game
at highbury liverpool were a 41 ,000 team and spurs were a 42,000 team. we only lost 4-1 once in all the times at highbury from71 and that was v ipswich in 1977. the emirates rocks when it gets going and the soul of a club is in its fans.i,m glad we play in a bigger stadium in front of more fans every week.we needed to move to stay competitive and it seems that we have done it on our terms.loved my first game but the next one is still the one i get excited about 40 years later.

Arsenal Vs Aston Villa

1986 / 7

I remember being just totally amazed by my surroundings. West Stand Lower, I'd never seen so many people and the noise was huge.

Martin Hayes came on as a sub and scored twice. We won 2 - 0. Needless to say Hayes was a bit of a hero for me for a few years after that.
No more excuses for failure..... WENGER OUT

woops a daisy martin hayesee.
good squad player.
scored a vital goal at boro on me birthday in 89.
that villa game was at the end of a season that brought us our 1st trophy in 8 years.
we were 4 pts clear of everton at the top after beating spurs at white hart lane in jan but it was a high point of our league season. we failed to win in our next 10 games and everton ended any hopes we had of winning the title beating us at highbury in the march
1 nil down 2-1 up was our mantra that season.
we did it 3 times to spurs and in the final when rush scored.
spurs had there own mantra
hoddle and waddles diamond lights.
despite being 13 pts clear of spurs they finished above us. but this was where we really left them in our slipstream.they lost the cup final to coventry and have been in our shadow ever since
